Has an offer really been made here?
On March 24 (12 days after applications were due), I got an email from Virginia Tech stating that they have now made an "initial selection of candidates," and asking for a writing sample. Did they really offer someone the position on March 31, as is claimed here? That would give them only a week to read the writing samples, conduct interviews, and pick someone to offer the job to. Seems unlikely to me. While I'm on the topic, there are other status updates here that I know are false, on the basis of personal correspondence with the search committees.
correcting false updates
If there are updates here that you or anyone else knows are false, could you please correct the false updates - by updating them again in a way that renders the error somewhat corrected? This could put many readers minds at ease (or at least in grief or more accurate stages of the waiting process).
