Privacy Policy

Phylo values your participation, both as a visitor to the site and as a contributor of information, and your privacy is important to us. Phylo adheres to a strict policy for ensuring the privacy of your personally identifiable information (PII), such as your full name, email address, and other identifiable information.

Public Information
The Phylo database may contain publicly available information about you, including your teaching appointments, publications, date of birth, and other professional activities.

Visiting the site
When you visit our site, Google Analytics tracking code will record non-PII, such as domain name, IP address, and what browser you are using. We use this information to improve the site's functionality, but no one can contact or identify you from this information.

User Registration
When a visitor requests a user account, we ask for verification from a .edu email address (or other means as determined by administrators) before the account can be used. You may also provide us with an alternate email address and demographic information, such as year of birth and current status in the profession. This profile information helps us improve Phylo for different audiences, and it is only seen by administrators. We will not share your profile information with a third party.

Cookies
Phylo places an industry-standard "cookie" file on your computer to track activity on our websites. This cookie is totally anonymous and does not store PII about individual users. You can choose to have the cookie store your username and password or to type them in each time you visit one of our sites.

Email Communications
Phylo sends occasional updates to subscribers. Registered users will never be subscribed automatically. You must choose to subscribe before receiving notices and may opt out at any time by contacting phylo@phylo.info. We will do our best to make your change in a timely manner. If you contribute information to Phylo, we may contact you regarding that information. We will never give your email address to a third party.

Submitted Content
Phylo uses Mollom, a third-party web service, to screen some submitted content for spam. Mollom stores submitted information, including limited PII, for up to two months. For details, see Mollom's privacy policy.

Under 18
Phylo does not knowingly collect PII from people under the age of 18. If we become aware that our database contains this information, we will remove it immediately.

Links
Phylo contains links to other websites, some of which may not follow the same privacy policies as Phylo. We are not responsible for the privacy policies of these sites or how they treat user information.

Law Enforcement Compliance
We may disclose to authorized law enforcement personnel the personal data from anyone who poses a threat to our interests.

Changes to Privacy Policy
Phylo will never use PII in new, unanticipated ways not previously discussed in our privacy notice without notifying users. All changes to Phylo's privacy policy will be posted on this page. We will attempt to notify you of these changes and provide you with an opportunity to opt out of them. If you have questions about Phylo's privacy policy, please contact us at phylo@phylo.info.
